The Gomo remix project, like many collaborations, was unexpected and largely born out of serendipity and chance. Breda, David Marston, and MOA came together to work on music while barely knowing one another. Within a short space of time, they created a musical idea revolving around the vocals of the late Chiwoniso, one of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated female mbira-players and vocalists.

Gomo, which means ‘Mountain’ in the native Zimbabwean language Shona, is a celebration of the music that comes from the Children of the Mountain. Saxophonist and producer MOA, aka Max Wild, performed this song live all over the world with Chiwoniso while touring together. His soulful sax is featured on this new reinterpretation of ‘Gomo’, and pays homage to the close musical and personal friendship he shared with Chiwoniso.

Notably, Breda, Marston, and MOA had been given permission to use Chiwoniso’s vocal tracks by her label, Cumbancha Records. Each of them took great honour in the opportunity to work on music associated with an artist and musician as revered and remarkable as Chiwoniso. As the song developed, the production trio endeavoured to reimagine Chiwoniso’s unique vocals in a contemporary context.

Eli of Soul Clap heard the song and quickly worked with Cumbancha to sign it to Soul Clap Records. He then reached out to DJ Spen, renowned Baltimore house music veteran, to do his own mixes to round off the package. The resulting 5 tracks constitute a release that, importantly, highlights the extraordinary brilliance of Chiwoniso as well as the talents of the four producers who contributed new versions of her music. Ultimately, the songs serve as a powerful way to commemorate Chiwoniso and to expose more of the world to her beautiful, poignant, and sublime music.
