Candyblasta found a piece of cloth with The Best of Obama Gold Wax written on it in a market stall in Dalston, London in 2012 during a writing session and decided to call the EP they were working on after it.
They are releasing the record on the US presidential inauguration day on their own imprint, Cold Lips.
Besides two previously unpublished songs If You Say You Want to Go and Stone Cold, the EP also contains the original rendition of The Ocean, an 11:30 minute track that generated waves almost immediately after its inception, finding its ways into the hands of Dani Baughman of Hivern Discs. The Ocean, uncredited due to its pre-release status, was included in his DJ mix for the Spanish newspaper El Pais.
The Ocean was also shortlisted for John Talabot’s DJ Kicks mix, but failed to be included because of missed deadlines. Candyblasta had been working on a faster version of the song which was later released on Permanent Vacation’s Safari 3 compilation.
Candyblasta, who consist primarily of songwriter Mark Velarde and producer Max Krefeld, and sometimes instrumentalist Gerald Williams formed the project in 2005 in Berlin. In 2008, Candyblasta signed to Permanent Vacation. Max’s other project Appaloosa, released on Kitsune, Italians Do it Better and Discotexas, toured with Cat Power, and at some point he worked with Ari Up in London, releasing the resulting track on Permanent Vacation.
Candyblasta built a reputation as an entrancing live act, performing with a complex setup of analogue synthesizers and drum machines, where they rework their arrangements live into a continuous dance set.
Their performances are dark, dynamic, melancholic but groovy, melodic and laden with danceable riffs. “The universe makes sense with Candyblasta’s music!” (a fan at Loftus Hall Berlin in 2012).
The clarinet in The Ocean is performed by Wolf Galanski.
