The gloriously eccentric Freude Am Tanzen imprint delivers its third LP of 2011 in the form of Douglas Greed’s superb autumn release, ‘KRL’. Having nurtured artists such as The Wighnomy Brothers, Krause Duo and Matthias Kaden over the years, Freude Am Tanzen is highly regarded as one of the most surprising and eclectic house/techno focussed labels around. From glitched-out downbeat to searing dancefloor techno the label never limits itself and there’s a real sense that every release is made and curated purely for the love. ‘KRL’ by FAT mainstay Douglas Greed fits neatly into the ‘for the love of it..’ pile. A diverse debut album that reflects the German producer’s vast tastes, ‘KRL’ is as refreshing as it is enjoyable. It was the famous Quincy Jones quote ‘I want the music to give me goosebumps. Music that moves my heart and soul’ that was the influence to Greed’s approach and it shows with his ability to craft music that has impact regardless of its setting. Leading with the beautiful ‘Pain’ feat Mooryc – a stuttered-beat, ethereal and vocal led cut that sucks the listener in, ‘KRL’ is drenched with melody and depth. Vocals continue to play apart throughout, whether it be the eerie hip hop of ‘Bridges Over Babylon’ feat Kemo or the sensual drawl of Dehlia de France on ‘Back Room Deal’. Live instrumentation sit so at ease with heavily edited electronics in tracks such as ‘Die Schwartz Witwe Liebe’ and the emotive ‘Hold It Together Til Our Friends Are Gone’, that it’s the constantly surprising music that really sings on ‘KRL’, whether it be house, downbeat, electro or techno. It’s impossible not to feel the full force of the skill on show after a listen but particularly difficult considering the epic closer ‘Shiver’. In ‘KRL’ Greed has created an album which uses every facet of his influences and the results are a superb mix of style and substance. Douglas Greed’s ‘KRL’ is released on Freude Am Tanzen mid-October, 2011.
