Following a big release for Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 label, the London duo return to their own Olmeto imprint and in the process focus on an acid house sound. Indeed, “What Do You Say Now” is an imaginative blend of laid-back reggae vocals, building filters and, as the arrangement climaxes, crashing techno snares. The title track also offers a level of unpredictability: starting with what sounds like a more textbook minimal techno groove, the hissing percussion and white noise give way to muffled vocals and, inexplicably, a sun-dappled Balearic house arrangement. They may have come a long way since the early acid house parties, but clearly Layo & Bushwacka have never lost that feeling.
