“What Came First” is a new label dedicated to House and Techno, which has been set up by the people behind the infamous Egg London club venue.
One of the UK and Europe’s best known clubs, Egg’s weekend line-up’s often include clubland royalty such as Sven Väth, Pig&Dan, Pan-Pot, Anja Schneider and if anything, it would be easier to list the artists not to grace the venues turntables.
This new release comes from EGG LDN resident Kyle E, whose distinctively deep and melodic sound has earned him legendary status amongst the clubs weekly attendants.
Kyle E is a producer many will recognise from John Digweed’s “Live On South Beach” compilation, which featured the Christian Burkhardt remix of Kyle’s track “Arp For You Heart”.
Arp For You Heart was taken from Kyle’s first and only release prior to his debut on What Came First and this much anticipated follow up will no doubt showcase why Kyle is a hotly tipped producer.
The release also features a remix from Columbian born David Delgado who is a regular collaborator with the likes of Mihai Popoviciu, Alex Piccini, Argenis Brito and Maik Yells under a variety of different aliases.
Known for his Jazz influenced sound full of detail, David’s music has featured on labels including Metroline Limited, Moan Recordings, Highgrade Records and Serkal.
“Metis” opens the release with shuffling percussion and ambient FX sounds that create a spooky atmosphere. Rising melodies and pads combine with dramatic synth stabs when washed in delay and reverb, make this slice of Melodic Techno feel vast and cavernous.
Second is the David Delgado remix of “Metis” which using sparse drums augmented with tom rolls and snare fills, is a Minimal reworking of the original. Murky, textured and subtle piano flutters fuse with wonky pads to form an intricate tapestry of sound. Infectious and full of personality, the track’s House focused groove provides stark contrast with the original version.
“Themisto” is built around ethereal pads which are layered over the elasticity of an acid bassline. Laid back with gentle bursts of arpeggiated melody, the track has an understated and delicate sound, which as the track develops, builds further with help of a second bassline which lifts the track.
Arguably saving the best for last, “Lysithea” finishes the release in epic style. A Balearic vocal pad, when blended with sparse percussion and poignant chords, forms the back bone of the track. Packed with emotion and a variety of different sections, the building tension makes this a perfect set builder.
